Ugh, okay…
Kiddo is in 2nd grade. She socially transitioned prior to starting kindergarten, but when she started kinder, we (she was included) met with the principal and vice principle and had a conversation about her being transgender. There was an overlap in kids who knew her from the neighborhood and/or daycare/preschool that knew her by her deadname and her name. One of the kids teased her at daycare/preschool so we wanted to be prepared in case that continued at school. No issues during the first part of kindergarten – then COVID happened. We stayed remote the rest of kinder and all of first grade so no interactions with the kid that teased her because they are not in the same grade. This year, she’s back in person and has come across him on the play ground a few times, but he’s never said anything to her… Fast forward to today… The Vice principal just called me and informed me that my daughter had come to the office VERY upset and wouldn’t talk to her – she only wanted the counselor, who was able to help calm her down some and then talked with the counselor and the vice principal to explain what happened. Apparently the kid who knew her in daycare/preschool told another kid (a boy she has a crush on, none the less) to call her by her deadname… Now the school wants to know how we want to handle this….
I’m going to talk to my daughter in a bit about how she wants to handle things, but also, I’m wondering what things would you all suggest for handling this? The VP was asking if I wanted to contact the parents or them, my gut says this is on them to do, not me, but they want to make sure they say and do the right things, so any suggestions?? I had a conversation about this YEARS ago, but I can’t remember the suggestions/wording for how to best handling these situations…Ugh, okay…
