Summer 2022 Family Advocacy 101 Webinar Series & Support Group
In response to parents and caregivers requests, we are proud to announce our Summer 2022 Family Advocacy 101 Webinar Series & Support Group. This groups will provide space for those with transgender/nonbinary youth in their lives a space to connect in response to the current political climate.
WEBINARS
The three webinars, open to the public, will feature experts discussing topics like advocating at school, speaking with reporters, and an overview of the current legal landscape.
💻 WEBINAR 1: Public Activism: Ways to Advocate and Lobby in Support of Trans Youth
Wednesday, May 18th
3-5pm PT
6-8pm ET
Debi Jackson (she/her) & Asaf Orr, Esq. (he/him)
All parents of trans youth advocate for their children. Some will only ever advocate privately with the local school or the pediatrician’s office. If you choose to become more vocal to take a stand against anti-trans legislative initiatives, tell your story in the media, or file a discrimination lawsuit, you need strategies for your messaging and for your protection. In this workshop, we will cover different situations from writing blogs, posting on social media, giving interviews to reporters, lobbying efforts through letters and phone calls, giving testimony in front of legislators, and how to deal with any backlash you receive from being public.
💻 WEBINAR 2: Media Training for Parents & Caregivers of Transgender/Nonbinary Youth
Wednesday, July 27
3-5pm PT
6-8pm ET
Rebecca Kling (she/her)
In the current political climate, many parents and caregivers with transgender/nonbinary youth are asked to publicly sharing their stories with the media and the world. While no family is ever obligated to speak to do so, sharing our stories as supportive loved ones can add value to the conversation. Join Trans Families and special guest Rebecca Kling to learn more about publicly advocating through storytelling. We’ll discuss pros and cons of sharing your story, how to work with reporters, how to create and enforce personal boundaries, and more.
💻 WEBINAR 3: The Current Legislative Landscape for Transgender/Nonbinary Youth Across the U.S.
Wednesday, September 14
1 – 2pm PT
4 – 6pm ET
Chase Strangio, ACLU (he/him or they/them)
Vivian Topping, Equality Federation (she/her)
The current political climate feels particularly hostile to transgender/nonbinary youth, and the landscape across the country is constantly changing. Join Chase Strangio and Vivian Topping for an overview of the current and emerging legal landscape for transgender/nonbinary youth.
