Thank you to the families, newcomers and the seasoned alike, that showed up for support group this past Sunday! We had families with kiddos ranging in age from 4 to 9 years old. The sharing was heartfelt and amazing. I appreciated everyone’s candor, presence and thoughts.
Topics explored ranged across:
- Navigating working with schools and administrations during a kiddo’s transition within, or introduction to, the school community;
- The unique challenges of the non-binary, gender-fluid and/or still-exploring child (with some great insight on seeking out organizations and resources that can offer adult transgender role-models (SANCA was mentioned and lauded for this, among others));
- The tribulations of gathering/wrangling support from skeptical family members – grandparents, spouses/partners, etc.;
- The fear and sadness that can accompany coming to terms with a transitioning child. Feeling protective, tentative about what the future holds and that sense of grief of something lost and;
- We touched on some practicalities like special underwear and swimsuits for the trans-girl, STP and packers for the trans-boy, restroom logistics and the like.
