Hi. This is my first post. We are 5 years from the initial “I’m trans” conversation- and our son (Alex) is thriving as a senior in high school.

As it nears his birthday, my heart breaks a little though. Since both my boys were babies, I would drag out the many, many scrapbooks and review their sweet childhood memories.

In 8th grade, Alex tearfully and angrily told me that he hopes I don’t bring them out again because the pictures are so painful, and he hates to see his “dead name”. Of course I left them on the shelves.

Now, I was an AVID scrapper. There are many shelves… my three best friends (met them at a scrapbook retreat! 15 years ago) saw my heartbreak and suggested a creative getaway.

That very weekend, I started re-scrapping some of our favorite memories of Alex. By carefully choosing gender-neutral photos, or making them black and white, or cropping the photos and layering them with other photos, I was able to create a book that Alex is comfortable with. He loves to see his name and pronouns in early childhood layouts. And it means so much to me that he once again has this tradition to enjoy on his birthday.

It’s a lot of work, but it’s a labor of love.
