How much of the name change process do you need to complete at once?

My son (age 22) wants to start the paperwork/name change process, but is feeling overwhelmed by how many different pieces there are to it. Besides the name change, birth certificate, social security, driver’s license, and passport, he has bank accounts, an apartment lease, payroll at his job, a library card, a Car2Go account, and probably a few more things we haven’t thought of.
Once he does the legal name change, does he have to get everything updated to match ASAP? Or can it be broken down into things that need to be changed right away, and things he can get around to a little later?
