Hi all – I’m delighted to have found a group where I can talk about my trans kid! I’d like to introduce myself.

Our 24-yr-old son Bryan came out to us as trans at Christmas. My hubby (Tom) and I reacted with unconditional love and support – but it’s still been a lot to wrap our heads around. Bryan lives in Pittsburgh; we live in North Dakota. We have another child, Bryan’s identical twin brother, James, who lives in Minneapolis. Bryan came out to James 6 months earlier, but hasn’t told anyone except her roommate and one or two very close friends.

Bryan started hormone therapy in February, and is trying to come up with a new name. For professional reasons (scientific papers published under her birth name), she wants to keep the same initials, but is having trouble coming up with a B name that suits her. It seems a little awkward to use feminine pronouns with the name Bryan, but that’s what we’ll do, until she decides on a new name (it isn’t easy!)

Bryan is not yet ready to come out publicly, so we have not told anyone. We have a small family – my Mom and 2 brothers on my side; one sister on Tom’s side. Tom’s sister won’t be a problem, but my family ranges from conservative (Mom) to more conservative (older brother) to racist, bigoted pig (younger brother). We are not looking forward to telling any of them. Luckily we have a lot of friends who we expect to be completely supportive of Bryan and of us.

As Bryan progresses through her transition, and we begin to tell others, I will share our experience here – I expect we will need some moral support and advice!

    Ann
