My daughter has been following along with this for a couple of years. The public conversation in the UK among feminists about transwomen has been developing in a frustration direction — in general, it follows along the “if they’re women then what am I?” path. Much of it seems like internal disagreements, but Rowling has amplified the volume on it several times by speaking up for the old-fashioned definitions of gender. I don’t need to tell any parent how much power she has in the public sphere, and her limited view of this issue frustrates me. I find it ironic that someone who could create such an astonishing and diverse world, with such an internalized sense of justice, cannot seem to imagine that there is any other way to be a woman than the way she lives.
Sigh.
