To our dear families and friends,
As the predominately white staff of Gender Diversity, we feel ill-equipped to speak on the current movement happening in our country focused on racial inequities. However, we also believe that this is part of the problem – feeling unsure of what to say, so choosing to say nothing. This is not the time to be silent. This is a time to be actively fighting against racism. Our country is systemically racist. It’s part of the fabric of who we are as Americans. As progressive and open-minded as we hope we are, we have many blind spots and biases. Our communities of color are suffering and have suffered for far too long. Black people are being killed by police at an astonishing rate. Trans women of color are being targeted and murdered. As an organization working with families of trans youth, we want to make space for all trans youth, not just a portion of the population. We need to have more conversations, the tough conversations. We must be willing to be humble when we get it wrong and teachable when we are met with new concepts. As an organization, we will work to root out our biases and have the tough conversations. We will listen to those that know more than we do and be open to their insights.
Black Lives Matter. Black Trans Lives Matter.
Yours sincerely,
The staff of Gender Diversity
