Dear Beautiful One,

I am the mom of a trans daughter named Stella. I always say that she has opened up an extraordinary world to me. Being able to see the world through her eyes has changed me in the most profound of ways. Stella taught me to see the process of coming out as sacred. It is an incredible honor when someone comes out to you, I believe. It’s a gift really.

I want to share some wishes I have for you, knowing I don’t know your specific circumstances.
  1. I wish that you experience what it feels like to be loved for all of who you are.
  2. I wish that you experience being celebrated and seen as a sacred gift.
  3. My wish for you is that you experience loving yourself for all of who you are and celebrate yourself as a sacred gift.
We may never meet and I want you to know that I have been fighting for you for years and will keep fighting for you until I can no longer fight. I know without question that I am a better person because you exist in the world. Our world is more beautiful and rich because you exist. I am so grateful to live in a world with nonbinary and trans people. I don’t ever want to live in a world without people just like you.

I also want you to know that there are hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people who cherish you across our country. Teachers, coaches, doctors, nurses, principals, superintendents, school board members, grocery store workers, truck drivers, journalists, elected officials, librarians, bus drivers, judges, engineers, construction workers….think of any job or career and I promise you there are many, many people who care about you. Even if you have not met any of these people, I pinky swear promise that they are real. Every time you need a reminder, I want you to re-read this letter.

Lastly, I want to tell you that this moment in time is not permanent. It does not define who you are or your worth. I can’t take away the pain of this moment for you, as much as I sincerely wish I could. I can and will love and celebrate you fully and unconditionally for as long as I live.

Signed,
Lisa
