Trans Awareness Week & Month
The month of November is dedicated to education about transgender communities and important issues facing trans people across the country. Many local organizations and community groups feature events and educational opportunities to uplift the voices and experiences of the transgender and gender non-conforming (transgender/GNC) community. During Transgender Awareness Month, there are a couple of important observances: Transgender Awareness Week and the Transgender Day of Remembrance, a worldwide gathering of trans and allied communities to memorialize victims of anti-trans hatred or prejudice.
Transgender Awareness Week occurs between November 13th and 19th, as a lead up to November 20th: Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR).
Examples of events you might see (mostly moved to online spaces this year) are:
- Panel discussions with local trans speakers
- Transgender movie screenings
- Book discussion of trans-themed books
- Trans themed art shows or performances
- Name change clinics
- Virtual recognition services for TDOR
If you can’t find local events taking place near you, check out our previous blog posts for some great resources you can use to create your own awareness event at home! Grab some books with trans characters or stories, watch the Babysitters Club, see a very relatable story in First Day, or check out some books about trans history.
And mark your calendars for the Trans Families Open House!
Come celebrate Trans Families with us at our Launch Event on Sunday November 15 from 1:00 – 2:30 pm Pacific. We want to show you what all the fuss is about and come together (virtually) to dance and be joyful. Featuring guest speakers Jodie Patterson (parent, author, Board Director with HRC) and Robert Tovar (parent, public servant, Workforce Development and Equity Program manager)! RSVP now.
Be sure to tell us what you’re doing to celebrate in the comments!
